Watch: Harmony Project's Leimert Park Funk Orchestra experiences 'Play' inside EastWest Studios

Harmony Project's Leimert Park Funk Orchestra recently took a trip to the legendary EastWest Studios to experience Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl's "Play" and try their hand at recording themselves. Check out this behind-the-scene's clip of their session and photos from the trip below.

The Funk Orchestra is currently raising $10,000 to attend Jackson State University's High School Day College Tour and Football Game. Help them reach their goal by attending their last Jazz Nite of the summer this Saturday, 6pm at The Blazer Center and making a donation.

HP SITE: EXPO, Class of 2016

Taya Stewart is a National Gates Millennium Scholar who will be starting her third year at Pepperdine University this Monday! She is the only black accounting major at Pepperdine, a member of the Black Student Association, and on the university debate team. Two summers in a row, Taya was awarded a prestigious paid internship with KPMG in downtown Los Angeles and was recently offered her third opportunity at KPMG for next summer. Check out Taya's advice to current Harmony Project students:

"The best advice for students now is to take advantage of the resources around you. Go to all the college workshops and family nights because you will remember the advice in the future. Also make an impact on those around you by staying in contact and showing love to other HP members."

We've entered the VR world!

Harmony Project was one of nine organizations selected by Facebook to join their VR for Good initiative. Back in August, we went to the Oculus headquarters for a boot camp and were paired with an amazing filmmaker, Elliot Dilman. Since then, we've captured our students and programs in 360º with our partner Reel FX. Our VR film "In Harmony" was showcased at the Oculus House during Sundance Film Festival, and it will also be showcased at SXSW Film & Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
We’re very excited!

Check Oculus' page for more info on In Harmony and all the project details:

In the Year 2050 in Los Angeles...

In the year 2050, we think South LA will be a thriving community of creative artists and professionals.

Today, South LA houses some of the lowest performing schools in Los Angeles and lacks enough arts teachers to fulfill graduation requirements. However, South LA is also home to four Harmony Project program sites and over 600 eager children who create beautiful music together.

With $100,000 from LA2050, we will expand our music programs across South LA, fostering creative growth and academic and professional achievement among generations of underserved children.

Introducing Student Intern Sandra Morales & Her Summer Project

My name is Sandra Morales and I’m a rising junior who goes to Fairfax High School. I’m also a musician and have been playing the trumpet since I was in 3rd grade.

I was an intern at Harmony Project this summer and had the opportunity to work on a special project. I interviewed two staff members in order to get to know them more and to see how they feel about Harmony Project.

Both interviews were different. I got to know more about the different jobs and responsibilities of the organization’s employees. It was a fun experience and I had a great time getting to know them.

I also practiced my photography skills and took pictures of some the staff members. I had a great time taking pictures because it reminded me of how I took pictures in photography class at my school. I made about nine prints in the darkroom and I had a blast! I didn’t know it involved chemicals. It was a learning experience and some pictures came out better than others. I hope to keep practicing doing more print and digital photography in the near future.

Helping out in the Harmony Project office and doing this summer project was a new and great experience for me. I had a great time and hope to do it again sometime in the future!
