Music Changing Lives in LA

PROGRAMS

Leimert Park and Greater Los Angeles

Hip Hop Orchestra is one of our newest programs and meets weekly with students learning a new song the first hour of rehearsal, while the second hour is spent performing with talented artists who come in to share this musical experience with the children and their families. This past year our Hip Hop students had the opportunity to perform with Oleta Adams, Loretta Devine, Debbie Allen Dance Company, and Christopher Cross!

Jazz Band, also located within the cultural region of Leimert Park, is lead by Amos Delone.

New Designs Music Academy was created at the New Designs Charter School with a select group of students. Our program is designed to target African American students as the African American Community has played such a key role in the evolution of American popular music. Currently we offer violin, cello, and keyboard.

Charles H. Kim Elementary has been a partner with Harmony Project for more than 2 years. This partnership began when the granddaughter of Charles H. Kim, one of the founding fathers of Koreatown, approached us about the lack of instrumental music at Charles H. Kim Elementary. Since that meeting we have provided violin instruction to over 50 students in partnership with LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program.

Alexandria Elementary, located in the heart of Koreatown, once had a huge orchestral program that was ended due to budget cuts. We were warmly welcomed into the school and community, both which have a rich tradition of culture and music. Last year, under the leadership of Olivia Sanchez, we had over 50 students apply for our violin program at this school.

Contemporary Flute Ensemble – In this class, students explore and familiarize themselves with the various roles, functions, and possibilities of the flute and/or flutist. The roles of the flute in ensembles, its function as a solo instrument or accompanist, and the technical practices that are possibilities on the flute will all be explored within this ensemble. By striving to have a thorough knowledge of the flute (its various registral tendencies, many nuances and technical possibilities, etc.), students become more comfortable with, and ultimately more virtuosic on, the flute. Students learn to improvise, create, write, and arrange music for the flute and various groupings of flutes: solos, duets, trios, and larger ensembles. All of the a fore mentioned concepts will be accomplished through ensemble practice and performance. Within the ensemble, students will practice various techniques, critique performances, receive advice and instruction, and learn repertoire.
