Music Changing Lives in LA

PROGRAMS

Glassell Park and Eagle Rock

Glassell Park Elementary Program began as an adopted school, when after three years it made sense to make it a full program to serve the North East side Los Angeles. This area posed many challenges, including a history of gang related violence, but more importantly it offered many opportunities, like a strong relationship between community and school staff. With the help and cooperation of the parents and the school, the Glassell Park Youth Orchestra was formed. This new Orchestra began with flutes and cellos (the instruments originally offered at the school) but in the fall of 2010 a new violin class was formed. This program is directed by musicians from CalArts and managed by Olivia Sanchez who feels that there is a great opportunity for growth in North East LA.

Eagle Rock Center for the Arts. Striving to grow and reach more students in the culturally rich and historical neighborhoods in Northeast Los Angeles, the Harmony Project recently partnered up with the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock beginning in the summer 2010. The center provided space for the Glassell Park Orchestra’s first summer music camp, which began on August 5, 2010 and consisted of a 5 week course. By the fall 2010 semester, the Harmony Project with the support of the center was able to extend its music program to the children in the Eagle Rock community by offering two violin classes at the center. The Center For the Arts is now serving as a sister site to the Glassell Park Program and working together to create and build a northeast L.A. community orchestra. We are hopeful that, through music, we’ll be able to reach a large portion of the children in these communities and give them the tools for a successful future.
